The Importance of Athlete Health

Athletic physicals are mandatory each year for athletes in grades 7 – 12 to participate in school sports per the State of Iowa.  But physicals are also an essential tool for the athlete as it ensures they can safely participate in sports.  An athletic physical, which can be done as part of the well child exam, can:

  • Identifying Unknown Medical Conditions
Providers can review personal and family medical history during an exam to screen for serious health issues. This could include cardiovascular, chronic lung or skeletal issues or conditions that could be dangerous for the athlete with athletic exertion or contact.
  • Preventing and Managing Injuries
A physical exam evaluates flexibility, strength, and joints to spot any muscular imbalances.  Past injuries will be reviewed for proper healing.  A safety plan may be created to protect the athlete including stretching exercises, braces as needed and inhalers for those with asthma.
  • Establishing a Baseline
Annual checkups record baseline data such as vital signs, vision, and concussion history. It also can check and record other physical and mental health indicators for future treatment.
  • Promoting Wellness
Physicals offer an opportunity to discuss nutrition, hydration, and health concerns as well as maintain proper age-appropriate vaccinations.
